The four firms behind the museum are headed by architects of predominantly African American heritage, a rarity in what is a white-dominated profession. Phil Freelon was the lead architect, with project leader Zena Howard responsible for the interior from the ground floor up. The practice of the late J Max Bond , a pioneer among black architects, handled the interiors below ground, while SmithGroup masterminded the envelope and foundations. The museum is a striking sight, changing its character as you move around it, shimmering like a golden crown in some lights, glowering as a menacing brown ziggurat in others.
